3 Ways To Waterproof Your Concrete Basement Or Foundation

Posted on

Concrete is a truly useful material that has a whole lot of applications. One of its really common uses is as the foundation for houses and buildings. It is very strong and can last for a long time, but it does have its drawbacks. One of the drawbacks is that concrete is porous. That means that it will let water into your basement or foundation if the concrete isn't handled properly. You are going to have to make sure that you get it treated so that water doesn't leak into your house. There are a number of things that you can do in order to make that happen.

Apply Sealant

One thing that you can do is to have a sealant applied to the cement when it has been laid and set. If you do that, that can help to keep water from leaking in through your concrete. You will have to have the sealant reapplied periodically so that it will stay sealed. This is going to be a better idea for places where the cement is going to be exposed all the time. If your basement, garage, or foundation is going to remain unfinished so that it is easily accessible, this may be a good choice for you.

Physical Barrier

Another option is to use a physical barrier. These are usually done when the building is being built. These barriers are generally made from a plastic material or another type of membrane. The membrane is usually put on the outside of the building during construction. When it gets installed, the membrane will be overlapped so that any nail holes are covered. This way, there are no holes for the water to get into.

Paint on Barrier

There are paint-on barriers that you can also use. They are a thick, rubberized material that you can just paint on the walls or the floors. There are some of these products that have color so that you can use them as wall color as well as the waterproofing material for your basement or foundation. If you can't find one with color, then you can just paint over the waterproofing layer.

If you have a basement that is starting to get some water in it, you want to make sure that you do everything that you can in order to keep that water from coming into your house. Water can cause a lot of damage and make it so that you end up with some really expensive repairs.
